The lovely bones

The Lovely Bones is centred on a young girl who has been raped and murdered. She watches from heaven as her family and friends struggle to move on with their lives ,while she comes to terms with her death. In 1973 Susie Salmon a 14 year old girl living with her parents, sister and brother, dreamed of becoming a photographer. In this opening film Sussie Slamon saves her brothers life as he was having an asthma attack.

The opening scene is the starting of the film and  is about Susie Salmon. She was a little girl remembering her early childhood crying while looking at her snow globe as the little snow man was in there by him self. Starting with a long shot, a high angle shot, a close up also using an extreme close up introducing the film The Lovely Bones. The angle of the shot when it shows the drawings of what Susie drawed as a child is an extreme close up. A pan shot turning to the right is showing Susie and her family's house. Part way in it is introducing  Susie Salmon  and what she is wanting to be when she is older, a Photographer. Following  a medium close up ,a medium shot, a bird eye level, canted shot, a worms eye shot and a hand held camera shot on her face while she is taking pictures of her self. A zoom up on her picture was developed from the camera. A pan shot is when Susie is running through her house and a two shot happens when she bumps in to her Mum. A crab shot is used when Susie is running around the house, then a mid shot and a  close up shot on her it  jump cuts to her sister exercising. A long shot is used and a freeze frame. The angle of the camera turns to the right then the left which is a pan shot going into an extreme long shot. The scene is then at the farmers dump then a zoom and a mid shot is of their  faces. The camera cuts from one person to another with a mid shot and then goes in to an extreme long shot looking down at the land and the box rolling down the hill.  A crab shot is used again while Susie is running through her house looking for her Mum following by a close up on her brother and a two shot  comes in to the scene.  A dolly shot is used when Susie is driving the car  and a long shot is used when they are just getting out of the car at the hospital. ending with a zoom up and a close up on her Mum and brother while he is having an asthma attack.

  1. Great that you have chosen your film opening! But I can't get that link to work for me? Can you find a different video of the first opening scene and put it up as a link?
You have written a very detailed explanation of the different camera shots in this opening scene. Also in this post, explain how this scene fits into the movie as a whole, then you are ready to move onto the next aspect of the assessment: How the director has used film techniques to create a mood and place the opening within a genre. Remember that there are a lot of different aspects of film, not just camera shots. Look back at your list of film terminology to get some ideas as well as the exemplar from O Tamaiti and ask questions because I think you might have missed some of the lessons when we looked at examples! Keep it up!

  2. I thought you had done some work on the mood/atmosphere created in this opening and also reworking part A? Check and finish both A & B quickly so you can focus on four techniques in more detail in C. Keep going!
